Magazine Project Genre Research- Discover




The issue is titled: The Power of Cute from the distributor Discover, which is a leading science and technology magazine for over 30 years, has a circulation of 550,000. The cover-page color scheme consists of blues, whites, and greys. One half of the page is a photo of a kitten facing forwards while the other half has the issues title, with the word “cute” in large soft blue letters. The table of contents comprises of an image of a 'black hole' taking up more than half the page. The issue is segmented into short and long articles. The short articles usually have the picture take up the whole page with a short article at the bottom half of the page. Like the article, Limited Lions, which has a full body shot of a mountain lion in the background and a study about mountain lions below. The full-length articles are 5-7 pages long with advertisements every two pages in between the articles. The full-length articles are introduced with a close-up photo of the article topic. For example, the article Reef Rescue has a full-page photograph of corals before introducing the main article. The article is separated by three columns with no pictures on the page. The titles for each long and short article are in plain text and each article has a designed border around them, this provides a uniformed design to the issue.

One advertisement includes a pain relief pill. The ad takes up the whole page and has a bright orange background. The advertisement is located right before the table of contents. On page 26, the advertisement shown is jewelry and diamonds. Based on the advertisements the demographics is focused on older women.
