InDesign Class Design

Today in class we utilized adobe InDesign to layout a 2-page spread. At first, I found the program intimidating since the layout is much different than publisher, however as we went along with the teacher I got more comfortable with the program. I believe I would use InDesign because it is easier to adjust the title and borders on my cover and article page. InDesign allows for a lot of negative space to be covered on the page. pictures are not difficult to adjust, and the columns of the text can be adjusted to look uniform. I also like the restrictive border of the page, which solves my problem of my text overflow on my magazine 2 page spread.

My Target Audience

The age of my audience would be older adults due to the scientific and environmental focus of my magazine. My product focuses specifically on Florida, so most if not all my audience would comprise of Florida residence. Income level would be middle to upper class citizens who has a university education level. They would have an interest in Florida’s natural ecosystem and the various nature preserves in Florida. My readers will be composed of affluent, educated nature lovers. There are four main characteristics fitting my reader profile: an outdoor enthusiast, a traveler, an activist, and gardener. My magazine will attract those who have a passion about nature and committed to improving the environment. Age Range : between 35-65 Gender Target : Male and Female Demographic : Floridians Personal Interest : Nature

Feedback and Revisions

When presenting my magazine, the feedback I received were both positive and negative. My classmates advised that these changes would greatly increase the authentic feel of my magazine. On the cover page, my classmates showed significant interest in the color scheme of my photo and vibrant pictures in my article spread. However, they had difficulty seeing the main headline text due to its position and color. The position of the headline will be moved up to make it easier to see against a darker background. I may consider changing the color of the text to a slightly darker yellow so that the text captures customers attention better. One main feedback received was the hyphens on the cover-page and table of contents. My peers suggested adjusting the text to remove the hyphens since they made the magazine look unprofessional. I plan to adjust the columns separating the article titles on the table of contents to remove any hyphens in the text. The article spreadsheet contained the...

Use of Conventions

T he social groups represented in this publication are all Florida citizens and environmental activists, and more specifically people who live in Sarasota. I mainly followed the structural layout of National Geographic and National Wildlife because they represent the norms of these types of magazine. Structurally my articles are based on the photographs taken from Florida's preserves.  I employed a conventional color theme for the cover page to emphasize a professional look to my publication. The close-up of the Rosary pea adds color and gives a focal point to my magazine, which also helped to identifying the theme of the magazine. I incorporated mostly browns and greens to portray a more natural atmosphere to my product. I also used conventional fonts and colors for the title and headline. Most of the articles research had white font color for the cover title an...

Midterm Submission

Due to the color of the background, the addition of a solid dark yellow bar at the bottom of the age made the black text visible. The headline had to be shifted up so that it was more noticeable against the brown bark. I changed the headline yellow to make it pop against the other colors of the cover photo. The magazine name font changed for stylistic preferences. The photo was chosen because of the attractive color scheme. The red plant is directly centered drawing the gaze to the cover of the magazine.  I made little changes to the layout of the contents page. The only changes made were in font choices and the color of the border. I mainly focus on picking photos from the various location visited to place in the contents section. I choose photos that contrasted each other and added color to the page. I also added an arrow next to the word “contents”, so that the word stood out more. I also change the color of the border so that it complements the yellow th...

Schedule Interviews and Develop Questions

One of my articles will contain an interview with a volunteer of Florida’s local preserves. The question would mainly ask the benefits of volunteering at local parks and preserves, and how others can volunteer. My magazine is aimed towards older adults and recreational organizations. Since my mother's company is connected to various national parks, my interview will be with Mrs. Barry. Due to her work, she often volunteers for local preserves and parks. The interview would occur December 18 th due to correlating schedules.  Questions: 1.       “How do you believe people can stay connected to their community?” 2.       “Do you think more mangroves should be placed along Florida’s coast?” 3.       “Why does your company volunteer their time towards Florida’s preserves?” 4.       “Should more companies get involved in their community's parks and preserves?” 5.   ...
